AmaMagna on the Danube - October 18 to October 25, 2026
Important Reminder: Just a quick reminder to check your passport expiration date. It’s standard practice for most international travel to require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. If yours is getting close, now is the time to renew so there are no issues.
Final payment: July 20, 2026.
*I’ll reach out about a week ahead of time to collect it so we have a little buffer in case anything needs to be sorted out.
I highly recommend travel insurance. You can choose to cover just your cruise or include airfare, hotels, and anything else you’ve added. Go with a policy that fits your situation and gives you coverage you feel good about. I often recommend Travel Insured, and their Worldwide Trip Protector is the most popular option, but you are free to choose whatever works best for you. Plan to have your insurance in place before making your final payment in July.
Some of you have booked extensions on either end of the trip through AmaWaterways, and some don't, so make sure you are planning based on your specific itinerary. If you did not book a pre-cruise extension through AmaWaterways, plan to arrive in Budapest on October 17th. The cruise begins on the 18th, and arriving the day before avoids any issues with delays and makes everything easier.
Boarding usually starts around noon, and it is incredibly simple. We had no trouble getting a taxi or Uber in Budapest, and the port was about a ten minute ride from our hotel downtown. Your room may not be ready right away, but you can board, relax, and start enjoying the ship. The exact port location will be confirmed closer to departure.
On the back end, if you did not book a post cruise extension, you can leave the ship in Vilshofen as early as 3:45 am. That is just when you can disembark, not when your flight should be. The transfer to the Munich airport takes about an hour and a half, and AmaWaterways offers that transfer for $99 per person. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to get to the airport, check in, get through security etc.
If you booked the Budapest extension, you will want to arrive on October 16th. That is your hotel check-in day at the Matild Palace, with your Hidden Budapest tour on the 17th before boarding on the 18th.
If you booked the Prague extension, AmaWaterways will transfer you on October 25 after the cruise and stay at the Andaz Hotel in Prague. You can plan your departure flight from Prague on October 28th. Transfers to and from the airport for extensions are available through AmaWaterways for $30 per person.
*Hotels are subject to change, but will likely be the ones listed.
A few of you are planning to head to Prague on your own after the cruise. AmaWaterways does not arrange that unless it is part of their package, but I can help coordinate transfers as we get closer.
I can also help with any transfers you want to add, whether through AmaWaterways or privately. We will sort all of that out around final payment time this summer, since even Ama does not lock those in until then.
It is PERFECTION!
Around the time of final payment this summer, you’ll be able to download the AmaWaterways app and find your cruise there using your booking number. Same goes for the AmaWaterways website. I’ll remind you in July.
Around that time, you’ll also be able to go in and choose your excursions, both for any pre or post extensions booked through AmaWaterways and for the cruise itself. We found that with the exception of a couple of bike tours that filled up, excursions were very flexible. People were swapping them out even minutes before departure the day of. So truly, don’t stress about locking everything in early.
As mentioned, I’ll confirm the exact port as we get closer to departure. Ours actually changed by about a mile the day before embarkation and we were notified through the app. If that happens for us, I’ll also let you know through our WhatsApp group. We had no issue grabbing a cab or Uber and were at the port within minutes.
Embarkation:
Embarkation was a breeze. An AmaWaterways representative met us as we got out of our cab, took our luggage, and walked us straight on board around noon. Check in took about 30 seconds. Our room happened to be ready and it was beautiful. There was a light lunch available, the bar was open, and we spent the afternoon exploring the ship and settling in while everyone boarded.
Daily Itinerary:
The cruise director does a great job making sure everyone knows what’s going on. Each evening before dinner, they go over the next day’s plan and answer any questions. You’ll also have access to the “Daily Cruiser” in the app about 24 hours in advance. It includes everything you need for the next day, port times, dinner times, weather, cocktail hour, what you’ll be cruising past and when, excursion details, meeting times, all of it.
Wellness:
The spa is small but really good. Appointments do book up, so if you want anything, stop by the concierge after check in and grab a time. A 60 minute massage was about 90 and absolutely worth it. No couples massages, there is only one therapist on board.
There are fitness classes most mornings, and those will be listed in your Daily Cruiser. The fitness center itself is also great if you prefer to do your own thing, plenty of equipment, mats, and space.
Pickleball was a blast. You can check out equipment at the concierge, it’s first come, first served. We tried to play in every country as we cruised, but got distracted often by castles.
Dining/Drinks:
Dining is easy and consistent. On board, all food is included. We rarely paid for drinks since beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner, and there’s a daily cocktail hour. When we did buy drinks, they were very reasonably priced.
Tea, and cappuccino/coffee are available 24/7. There are water refill stations on each level, and reusable AmaWaterways bottles were in our stateroom when we arrived.
Breakfast is usually from 7:30 to 9:30.
Lunch is usually from 12:30 to 2.
Dinner is usually right at 7.
*There are two restaurants that require reservations, Jimmy’s and Chef’s Table. Those are made on board, and I’m going to try to coordinate group reservations for us and will keep you posted. For the main dining, you just show up as indicated in your Daily Cruiser.
There are also light snacks available late night if you need them.
Onboard, we had a card on file with AmaWaterways, but even so, everyone seems to get a note in their room a few days in asking you to stop by the desk to put a card on file. This covers things like spa appointments, extra beverages, etc. It took maybe a minute at the concierge.
For tipping, I preferred to tip cash individually in Euros throughout the week when someone really stood out. On the last day of the cruise, you’ll receive two envelopes, one for the crew and one for the cruise manager. We didn’t have a ton of cash left by then, so we just went to the concierge and filled out a form to add the tips to our credit card. It was quick and easy.
Here’s what AmaWaterways recommends for tipping:
Ship’s crew
The total is shared among the entire crew
145 Euros per guest for a 7 night cruise
Cruise manager
This is separate from the crew
Recommendation is 30 Euros per guest for the cruise, plus 5 Euros per day for any pre or post extensions
We personally tipped above those amounts and also gave some additional cash tips along the way to people who really stood out.
Off the ship, we used credit cards most of the time. AMEX was rarely accepted, so plan on using Visa or Mastercard.
We kept a small amount of Euros on hand for tips, drivers, guides, and small purchases.
Budapest is the only stop where the local currency is not the Euro, they use the Hungarian Forint. That said, most places still accepted Euros. We did take out a small amount of local currency just to have it on hand.
As for weather, expect beautiful autumn scenery with daytime highs around 60°F and cooler evenings. Rain and fog are possible, especially in the mornings.
Don’t forget your swimsuit. We loved sunrise in the hot tub, and there’s also a small heated pool on board.
Plan to pack casually elegant clothing, plus one slightly dressier outfit for the Captain’s Dinner or a concert if you decide to go. That said, people were far less dressed up than we expected. Jeans with a nice blouse, button up, or polo were completely fine most nights.
During the day, just keep your excursions in mind and dress for comfort. Good walking shoes are a must, and it’s worth bringing one nicer pair for evenings. You’ll likely experience a range of temperatures, so layers are your friend, and don’t forget a rain jacket.
If you plan to use the fitness center or join any of the morning classes, bring workout clothes. There are also walking and biking excursions where you’ll want to be comfortable.
*AmaWaterways has umbrellas and walking sticks on board that you can borrow.
One thing we wished we had brought was binoculars. Birding from the ship was incredible.
We brought a power adapter but didn’t end up needing it since there were multiple outlet types in the room. Still, I always recommend traveling with one just in case.
*Laundry service is included if you’re staying in a suite. Otherwise, it’s very affordable and often comes back the same day, so no need to overpack.
When we were there in early March, it felt very similar temperature wise, just without the fall colors. Honestly, it was perfect weather for exploring!
We weren’t on the exact same itinerary, but it was very similar. A lot of the time we just walked off the ship and explored on our own, and it ended up being some of our favorite parts of the trip. Sharing a few things we loved along the way:
Hotel Corinthia, Budapest
https://www.corinthia.com/en-gb/budapest/
This is where we stayed the night before the cruise, and it was amazing.
We booked an executive room with spa access, which also included access to the executive lounge. It’s open most of the day into the nighyt and has snacks, small bites, desserts, drinks, coffee, tea, and a full bar setup. No cost! Plenty of comfortable seating, places to hang out, play cards, or just relax. Very easy, very chill. Five stars.
The spa and pool area is one of the coolest parts of the hotel. Access is included with executive level rooms, and it’s a full setup with a pool, hot tubs, sauna, steam room, and more. After a long travel day, it was perfect. We checked in, dropped our bags, and immediately went to the spa. Hot tubs, steam room, sauna, all indoors surrounded by beautiful mosaics. It feels a little over the top in the best way. The next morning we swam laps in the pool and did the whole circuit again before heading out. Honestly, one of the best ways to start the trip. It was a 10 minute taxi to the ship. Easy!
New York Café, Budapest
Right up the street from the Corinthia is the New York Café, and it’s absolutely worth a stop.
It’s one of those places that feels over the top in the best way. Huge ornate ceilings, gold details everywhere, live classical music...the whole thing feels like you walked into a palace.
Yes, it’s known for being “touristy,” but honestly, who cares. It’s iconic for a reason.
The cappuccinos come topped with 24k gold, which is ridiculous and fun, and exactly the kind of thing you do once and enjoy. We expected the line to be a nightmare, but it moved quickly and only took about 15 minutes to get in. It’s not a rush in and out spot. Sit down, take it in, enjoy it. Definitely worth a stop.
The Spot, Budapest
https://www.thespotbudapest.com/en
Dinner with absolutely gorgeous views of the Parliament building here, one of those places where you just sit there for a second like… ok wow. If you can, make a reservation for sunset and sit outside. The backdrop is unreal, especially as the lights come on. Our food was some of the best we had on the entire trip, and the service was phenomenal. It was a little chilly when we were there, so we ended up dining in these lit up igloos, which was such a fun touch. Those are seasonal, but if they’re there when you go, definitely grab one.
Bath Culture, Budapest
You cannot go to Budapest and not experience the baths. It’s a whole thing, and now I get why.
We went to Széchenyi, which is one of the most iconic thermal bath complexes in the city. Picture massive outdoor pools, steam rising off the water, beautiful old architecture all around you, and people just casually hanging out like this is a normal Tuesday. It’s such a vibe.
The outdoor pools were our favorite. Warm water, cool air, just floating around taking it all in. There are also saunas, steam rooms, and different temperature pools if you want to bounce around and try everything.
And then… we did the beer bath.
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You sit in a warm wooden tub filled with water infused with hops, malt, and herbs, and you have your own taps right next to you pouring fresh beer while you soak. Completely ridiculous in the best way.
I asked them about booking with friends and they gave me their email so you can email them directly. Ben and I reserved a package with a private changing room and two beer baths in one private space. They also have larger rooms with multiple tubs, so if a few of you want to go together, definitely ask about that. You can do 1-2 people per beer bath.
If you do it, get the package that includes access to the Széchenyi thermal bath complex and plan to spend a few hours there. Go soak, grab a drink, wander through the different pools, and just enjoy the whole experience.
It ended up being one of the most fun and memorable things we did in Budapest.
Das Loft, Vienna
https://www.dasloftwien.at/en/
We went up to Das Loft for cocktails. Dinner felt like a whole production and we weren’t in the mood for that, but drinks were perfect.
The views over Vienna are unreal. We timed it for sunset and just sat there watching the city light up as the sun went down.
Right around dusk, bats started coming out, and we watched a kestrel swooping around hunting them, which was wild to see right over the city.
And then, as if that wasn’t enough, the ceiling inside lights up and reflects out over the windows in a way that makes it feel like the view goes on forever. It’s hard to explain, but it was incredible.
Definitely worth stopping in for a drink while you’re out exploring Vienna. Five stars!
